WWWest 2007

CEIT and ATM will host WWWEST 2007, to be held November 5-6, 2007 in San Sebastian, Spain.
CEIT (contact Dr. Eduardo Ayesa) is a very active Scientific Support Center and ATM (contact Mónica de Gracia) is the distributor of WEST® in Spain.
The general topics for WWWest 2007 are:
Day 1: Dynamic modeling in design.
When making a design, the engineer has to come up with a configuration and dimensions based on influent characteristics as P.E., hydraulic load, COD, BOD, TN, NH4 and TP. Based on the goal he defines a number of design parameters as the SRT, aerobic SRT, etc., which lead him to an initial design based on the averages. The design rules used (rules of thumbs) are typically steady state models and empirical models (models based on experience) to which a number of safety factors are imposed in order to account for the uncertainty. This design should be evaluated under different less optimal scenarios. Typically one tests the design for an average, high and low load. Dynamic modeling can play a role in the evaluation and optimization of the initial design. A second possibility is that dynamic modeling can be used to come up with the dimensions for the design, so called 'inverse modeling'. There is definetly a need for tools in order to facilitate the use of dynamic models in design. Further a number of criteria is imposed to the models used for the design (solving the lack of data, having good default values, pH modeling…).
Day 2: Practical modeling cases.
Models are used commonly with our clients. Here the opportunity is given to exchange experience and applications of models.
Key-note speakers:
Peter Vanrolleghem (modelEAU, Québec, Canada): Modeling acid-base, complexation and precipitation reaction systems (Monday, November 6)
Peter Vanrolleghem, bio-engineer, PhD in environmental technology, is head of the modelEAU research team and has ample experience with modeling, monitoring and control of wastewater treatment systems. The development of new sensors (respirometer, Settlometer, titrimeter), optimal experimental design techniques, and benchmarking of control strategies using simulation have been important scientific contributions, next to modeling and simulation methodologies (WEST, GREAT-ER). He has over 200 peer-reviewed papers and is very active within IWA, the International Water Association. Jeremy Dudley (WRc, London, UK): The use of dynamic models in design (Tuesday, November 7)
Jeremy is a Senior Process Engineer, with expertise in the modeling of sewage treatment systems; activated sludge systems and modeling of processes and hydraulics at sewage and industrial effluent treatment works, both in the UK and overseas. This has included methanol-aided denitrification systems, modifying activated sludge models to predict the fate of methanol through the aeration system; modifying settling processes to study the partitioning of radionuclides; and routine wastewater modeling for air and oxygen activated sludge systems. He regularly runs training courses for users of the WRc software packages and is responsible for the continued development of WRc's software programs, STOAT, Plan-It STOAT and OTTER, and the software elements for TR61. He developed a program to compare the power and chemical costs of a large UK utility against the values that would have occurred had they operated following their internal best practice guidelines. He has 15 years experience of sewage treatment systems, 10 years experience of mathematical modeling of sewage treatment systems and pilot work experience with activated sludge and sedimentation. Registration:
In order to facilitate administration registration before September 15 would be greatly appreciated. After that date MOSTforWATER cannot guarantee the availability of hotel rooms. Venue:
The venue of hotel is hotel Amara Plaza, Plaza Pio XII, 7, 20010 San Sebastian, Spain. In order to get the special WWWest discounts, reservations should be made through MOSTforWATER. Extension deadline for abstract submission:
The deadline of abstract submission has been extended to September 15.
Because of the informal character of WWWest, MOSTforWATER does not need a full paper. The selection of the presentation is made based on an abstract of the work. In order to include the presentation in the booklet the presentation needs to be provided on October 15. Important dates:
Deadline for receiving abstracts: September 15, 2007 Notification of the speakers: October 1, 2007 Deadline for receiving presentations: October 15, 2007 WWWest 2007: November 5-6, 2007
